Castello Di Stefanago - Organic & natural wines from Lombardy

Antonio and Giacomo Baruffaldi have long followed organic farming, striving to achieve healthy, natural grapes, that reflect the terroir on which they are grown.

Castello di Stefanago: Wild wines from the Oltrepò hills

High in the Oltrepò Pavese hills of Lombardy, Castello di Stefanago is more than a winery - it’s an ecosystem. Run by the Baruffaldi brothers, Antonio and Giacomo, this historic estate is a haven for biodiversity and natural winemaking. Every wine is a direct expression of their land, their rhythms, and their refusal to compromise.

Organic farming, regenerative mindset

At Castello di Stefanago, everything begins in the soil. The estate is certified organic, but the brothers go further -planting cover crops, encouraging wild growth, and using no synthetic inputs. Sheep graze between the vines, bees pollinate the flora, and every action is designed to support long-term vitality.

Local grapes, ancestral methods

Stefanago works almost exclusively with native varieties like Croatina, Barbera and Uva Rara. Many wines are made in the ancestral method - bottled during fermentation, unfiltered, with no disgorgement. The results are rustic, expressive, and vibrant, with a strong sense of place and story.

A castle in the clouds

The vineyards surround a 1,000-year-old castle perched at 500 meters above sea level. Clay and limestone soils, wide diurnal shifts, and constant wind help preserve acidity and freshness - especially important for their ancestral method sparkling wines and long-macerated whites.

Fermentation with freedom

There are no recipes here. Fermentations are spontaneous, vessels range from cement to clay to old wood, and every cuvée is allowed to find its own pace. This hands-off approach leads to wines that are alive, textural, and often surprising - perfect for drinkers seeking the wild edge of Italian wine.

Campo Castagna: Alpine pinot nero with soul

Campo Castagna is Castello di Stefanago’s purest expression of Pinot Nero. Grown at altitude on limestone-rich soils, it’s fermented with native yeasts and aged in neutral oak. The result is a delicate yet deep red, with notes of red cherry, crushed rose, forest herbs, and spice. Elegant, wild, and whisperingly complex - this is Pinot with a distinctly Lombard identity.
